Stadler has won its first contract in Ireland to supply new FLIRT trains for the Dublin-to-Belfast route. The deal, backed by Irish Rail and Northern Ireland Railways, marks a major step in upgrading cross-border travel. Eight modern hybrid trains will replace older models by 2030. The project involves a total investment of around €698 million, including €165 million from EU grants. The FLIRT trains will run on a diesel-electric-battery hybrid system, allowing smooth operation across different power networks. This flexibility ensures reliability on routes with varying infrastructure.

Once fully running, up to 16 trains per day will serve passengers in each direction. The new fleet aims to cut journey times to under two hours while improving comfort. Stadler will also provide long-term support, covering technical maintenance, spare parts, and crew training. The trains are set to enter service in 2030, offering faster and more efficient travel between Dublin and Belfast. The project’s funding includes significant EU contributions, reinforcing cross-border transport links. Stadler’s involvement ensures ongoing operational support for the fleet.
