Maharashtra's New Rail Freight Corridor to Slash Logistics Costs and Boost Trade

Maharashtra is set to boost its industrial competitiveness with a new rail freight corridor. The project aims to cut logistics costs to seven or eight per cent, making the state’s industries more globally competitive. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis proposed the dedicated railway line to connect key ports and industrial hubs. The proposed corridor would link Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Vadhvan Port with inland dry ports and industrial clusters. JNPT currently handles nearly 60 per cent of India’s container traffic. Vadhvan Port, still under development, is expected to become one of the world’s largest ports, greatly increasing Maharashtra’s cargo capacity.

Land for the railway has already been reserved along the 701-kilometre Samruddhi Expressway. The network would also connect dry ports at Jalna and Wardha, extending further to Gadchiroli. Maharashtra already contributes 14 per cent to India’s GDP and accounts for almost one-fifth of the country’s exports.

The state has also become a major hub for electronics manufacturing and data centres, establishing itself as a technology leader. The government remains committed to supporting business growth and industrial expansion across the region. The new rail freight corridor is designed to lower transport costs and strengthen Maharashtra’s position in global trade. It will improve connectivity between major ports, dry ports, and industrial areas. The project aligns with the state’s efforts to foster a business-friendly environment and drive economic growth.
