Vandalism of UDA candidate's billboard sparks fears in Captain Town by-election

Violence has disrupted a largely peaceful parliamentary by-election campaign in Captain Town. A giant billboard bearing the image of UDA candidate Samuel Muchina was vandalised over the weekend. The incident has sparked concerns about escalating tensions in the area. The vandalism took place on Saturday evening after the Kaibaga football tournament at Salient Secondary School. Videos of youths pulling down the billboard have since spread widely on social media. A nearby rival’s billboard remained untouched.

Muchina reported that the perpetrators arrived in Captain Town in two lorries. He provided the registration numbers to the police. The incident was officially recorded as malicious damage under OB No. 05/28/06/2026 at Captain Police Patrol Base.

This is the first reported case of campaign material destruction since the by-election campaigns began. Muchina has since appealed to both rivals and supporters to keep the campaigns peaceful. He also plans to notify the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) about the incident. The attack has raised fears that the campaign could turn violent if not addressed quickly. Muchina’s team has taken steps to report the matter to both the police and electoral authorities. Observers are watching closely for further developments.
