Kostanay's Largest Dog Shelter Overwhelmed by Record Stray Surge

The largest dog shelter in Kostanay is struggling with overcrowding as stray numbers rise. Around 300 animals are currently in its care, with every kennel and enclosure packed to capacity. Some dogs even live in communal pens or roam freely on the grounds. The surge in stray dogs comes from summer residents abandoning their pets. Many leave animals at the shelter without stopping, sometimes damaging perimeter cameras to avoid being identified. The facility sits on the grounds of a gardening association, a common dumping spot for unwanted dogs.

About 100 of the shelter’s dogs were captured after public requests. They have since been sterilised and vaccinated. Volunteers now aim to find responsible caregivers for these animals before releasing them.

Conditions are tight, with some dogs chained and others moving freely. Large breeds pose a particular challenge, as they require more space and cannot be safely returned to the streets. The shelter remains under pressure with around 20 dogs still living on the streets. Volunteers continue their efforts to manage the growing population. Their focus is on securing safe, long-term care for the animals in their charge.
