Nizhny Novgorod's Eastern Bypass to slash congestion and spur growth
Plans for a new Eastern Bypass around Nizhny Novgorod aim to tackle long-standing transport issues. The project is set to improve connections with the Kirov Region and the Republic of Mari El while easing congestion in the city itself. The bypass will be built under a concession agreement, with talks on its final terms now taking place. Once complete, it will redirect transit traffic away from Nizhny Novgorod, reducing delays for local residents and businesses.
The road is expected to unlock significant economic potential. Land near the M-12 highway in the region is valued at 156 billion rubles, with forecasts suggesting new jobs and housing will follow. Tourism near the Rowing Canal is also predicted to grow as access improves.
A total of 23 residential schemes and 17 industrial projects are planned along the route. Combined, these could attract over 200 billion rubles in investment. Addressing infrastructure bottlenecks remains critical to making the region more attractive for development. The Eastern Bypass is designed to remove key barriers to growth in Nizhny Novgorod. By improving transport links and freeing up land for development, the project could bring major economic benefits to the area. Its success depends on finalising the concession terms and securing the planned investments.
