Dubai's 178 pedestrian bridges slash fatalities and boost walkability by 2025

Dubai has expanded its pedestrian bridge network from 26 structures in 2006 to 178 by the end of 2025. The growth coincides with a sharp drop in pedestrian fatalities, from 9.5 deaths per 100,000 people in 2007 to 0.22 in 2025. Residents report high satisfaction with the city’s walking infrastructure, currently at 88%. Three new pedestrian bridges have just been completed. Two span Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, while a third serves Al Manara Street, aiding movement in the Al Quoz Creative Zone.

Three more bridges are under construction. These include two large crossings for pedestrians and cyclists, one linking Muhaisnah 1 with Al Twar at 554 metres and another crossing Dubai-Al Ain Road at 730 metres. The new structures will also cover key corridors like King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, Al Ittihad Road, and Omar bin Al Khattab Street.

Between 2024 and 2025, pedestrian trips in Dubai increased by 6% and cycling trips by 23%. The Roads and Transport Authority plans to add 31 more pedestrian bridges and tunnels between 2026 and 2030. The expansion of pedestrian infrastructure has supported safer and more frequent walking and cycling. The city’s network now includes 178 bridges, with further growth planned. Pedestrian fatalities have fallen significantly as a result of these improvements.
