Houston becomes Uber's next hub for self-driving robotaxis in 2027

Uber, Nuro, and Lucid have chosen Houston as the second city for their robotaxi service. The project will launch in mid-2027 and operate exclusively through the Uber app. The initiative marks a major step in autonomous ride-hailing technology. Preparations are already underway. Lucid will start building production-validation robotaxis at its Arizona factory in the coming weeks. These vehicles will feature Lucid Gravity electric SUVs equipped with Nuro’s self-driving software.

Nuro has a long history in Houston, having tested autonomous vehicles on public roads since 2019. The company previously ran Level 4 autonomous operations in the city. Currently, an engineering fleet of nearly 100 robotaxis operates across California and Texas.

Uber has secured a 50,000-square-foot depot and charging facility in Houston to support the fleet. The service will be owned and operated by Uber and its partners, with riders accessing it only via the Uber network. The Houston robotaxi service is set to begin in mid-2027. It will use Lucid’s electric SUVs with Nuro’s autonomous technology. Uber will manage the fleet and provide exclusive access through its app.
