India-Russia maritime route from Chennai to Vladivostok faces delays despite strategic push

India and Russia have been exploring ways to strengthen transport links between their ports. In November 2024, India’s Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways announced plans for a direct sea route from Chennai to Vladivostok. However, the route has yet to begin operations due to low cargo demand. The proposed Chennai-Vladivostok maritime route would cut travel time to around 25 days, compared to over 40 days via Europe. Despite this advantage, no regular service currently operates on the route, and none is expected soon. Shipping companies have shown little interest, citing insufficient cargo volumes and vessel shortages on other routes.

In December 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed a joint declaration to deepen cooperation on transport corridors. The Chennai-Vladivostok route is part of this broader effort, which also includes the Northern Sea Route and the International North-South Transport Corridor. Vladivostok is seen as a key hub in the development of the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor. The Chennai-Vladivostok route remains in the planning stage. Its future depends on increased cargo demand and the resolution of logistical challenges. The agreement between Putin and Modi signals continued support for the project, but no immediate launch is anticipated.
