Maharashtra launches integrated bus network to transform Mumbai's commuting experience

The Maharashtra Government has launched an initiative to develop an integrated bus transport system for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The project aims to improve connectivity and create a seamless travel experience for millions of daily commuters across the area. The initiative is part of the Growth Hub (G-HUB) programme, with Mumbai Metropolitan Region selected as a pilot city-region. Two committees have been formed to prepare a detailed roadmap for integrating bus services: a Technical Group and a Study Group.

The Technical Group, which includes representatives from various municipal transport undertakings, will focus on operational aspects. These include route rationalisation, synchronising bus schedules, and exploring technology integration among transport operators. The group has been given until July 15, 2026, to submit its findings.

The Study Group, led by the General Manager of BEST, will address policy and financial matters. Its tasks include developing a common fare structure and a revenue-sharing mechanism for the integrated system.

The initiative is designed to reduce travel complexities and improve service coordination. It will also support sustainable urban mobility in the MMR. Once in place, the integrated bus system is expected to benefit millions of commuters. It will provide better connectivity between cities, improve access to employment centres, and reduce reliance on private vehicles. The project will also complement existing investments in metro, suburban rail, and other mass transit systems, creating a connected multimodal transport network.
