Canada imposes 10% tariff on imported canned vegetables to protect local growers

The Canadian government has introduced a temporary 10% tariff on certain imported canned vegetables. The move aims to tackle urgent challenges faced by the country’s canned vegetable industry. The new tariff is designed to address critical circumstances affecting Canadian growers and processors. It will remain in place for up to 200 days to stabilise market conditions and reduce trade diversion effects on domestic producers.

The Canadian International Trade Tribunal is currently investigating whether rising imports of canned vegetables are harming or threatening to harm local vegetable growers and processors. Not all imports will be affected, as the tariff excludes canned vegetable imports from the United States, Mexico, Israel, Chile, and developing countries. The measure provides short-term relief for the domestic industry. It will remain effective for a limited period while the tribunal continues its assessment. Imports from specific countries will continue without the additional charge.
