CATL's key lithium mine in China resumes production after permit delays

CATL has secured all necessary certificates to resume production at its Jianxiawo lithium mine in Yichun, Jiangxi. The site, located in a region known as Asia’s lithium capital, is set to restart operations after a pause last year. Some local workers have already begun training for the return to work. The mine’s production was halted on 10 August 2025 after a key mining permit expired the day before. By the end of September 2025, the reserve report gained approval. The most critical safety permit was then obtained on Monday, clearing the way for a full restart.

Electric mining trucks were spotted at the mine’s entrance on 28 June, signalling preparations for renewed activity. CATL, the world’s largest power battery supplier with a 40.1% global share in early 2026, also plans to use sodium-ion batteries in 10,000 to 20,000 EVs next year. The mine’s restart will support lithium production, a vital material for EV batteries. These batteries make up a significant portion of an electric vehicle’s cost. CATL’s plans for sodium-ion batteries further highlight its role in the growing EV market.
