Maharashtra Battles Rising Human Trafficking With 892 Victims in 2024
Maharashtra remains one of India’s worst-hit states for human trafficking. In 2024, authorities identified 892 victims, with 78 of them being minors. Women, adolescent girls, and children are the most targeted groups in the state. Last year, Maharashtra recorded 337 trafficking cases, marking a rise in reported incidents. A total of 885 victims were rescued, including Indian and foreign nationals. Sexual exploitation drove most cases, with 829 victims trafficked for commercial purposes.
Traffickers use deception or force to push victims into prostitution, domestic servitude, bonded labour, child marriage, organised begging, and the illegal sale of newborns. Organised criminal networks continue to exploit vulnerable individuals across the state.
To tackle the issue, Maharashtra has set up Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs) in districts. These units aim to strengthen enforcement, improve coordination between states, and provide better rehabilitation for survivors. Authorities highlight the need for stricter action against trafficking networks. Better interstate cooperation and stronger support systems are essential to protect victims. The state’s efforts focus on reducing exploitation and aiding those affected.
