Dutch Islamic schools surge as enrolment hits 20,000 by 2025

Islamic education in the Netherlands has grown rapidly over the past decade. Enrolment in Islamic primary schools rose sharply, with more than 20,000 pupils attending them by early 2025. The expansion has drawn both public funding and political debate. Between 2009 and 2019, the number of pupils in Islamic primary schools increased by 60%. In the following five years, enrolment grew by an additional 23%. By 2025, these schools received nearly €145 million in public support annually.

Reforms that made it easier to open new schools helped drive this growth. Nine more Islamic primary schools are set to open in 2026, bringing the total to over 100 across the country. Islamic secondary schools have also expanded quickly.

At the same time, evening and weekend Islamic schools have multiplied, often operating with little oversight. Dutch intelligence has warned about foreign funding for these institutions, fearing outside influence. Despite these concerns, the Senate recently blocked a proposal aimed at limiting foreign control over religious schools. The steady rise in Islamic schools reflects changing demographics and policy shifts. With continued growth expected, the sector remains a point of financial and political attention. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as new schools prepare to open.
