Arizona Eyes an Autobahn-Style Highway with No Speed Limits

Arizona may soon see its own version of Germany’s Autobahn if a new bill gains traction. State Representative Nick Kupper has proposed legislation to create an unrestricted highway in the state. The plan aims to blend driver freedom with safety measures inspired by international models. The bill, part of the RAPID Act, was initially assigned to a committee but did not receive a hearing in the current session. It was paused due to legislative deadlines and will be reintroduced in January. Kupper remains confident in the concept and intends to use data from the Autobahn and other unrestricted highways to demonstrate its safety.

Under the proposal, the highway would have an advisory speed limit of 130 km/h (80 mph), but drivers could travel faster if their vehicle allows. Commercial vehicles would still face speed restrictions. Out-of-state drivers would also have access to the unrestricted zones if the bill passes. Kupper argues that the bill could reduce vehicle fatalities while giving drivers more freedom. The people of Arizona have expressed support for the proposal. If successful, the highway would mark a significant change in the state’s transportation laws.
