China's high-speed rail expansion transforms travel and economy in eastern regions

China has expanded its high-speed railway network by nearly a third over four years. The country’s total operating mileage grew from 37,900 km in 2021 to 50,400 km by 2025. A key example is the Hangzhou-Taizhou line, which opened in early 2022 and has since transformed regional travel and industry. The Hangzhou-Taizhou high-speed railway stretches 266.9 kilometres, connecting Hangzhou, Shaoxing, and Taizhou. Trains run at a designed speed of 350 km/h, cutting travel time between Hangzhou and Taizhou from over two hours to just 74 minutes. Operations began on January 8, 2022, with daily cross-line services doubling from 17.5 pairs to 35.

This railway marks a milestone as China’s first high-speed line controlled by private capital. It is also among the first funded through a public-private partnership, attracting social investment in railway construction and operations. The project has supported market-oriented reforms in the sector while ending the lack of railway access in areas like Shengzhou, Tiantai, and Xinchang.

The line has carried over 100 million passengers since opening. It has boosted local economic growth and specialty industries along its route. Improved transport links have drawn workers to the region, with more than half of Aowang Times Technology’s employees now coming from outside the area. The railway has reshaped travel and economic activity in eastern China. Faster connections and new investment models have strengthened regional development. The expansion reflects China’s broader push to grow its high-speed network and involve private capital in infrastructure.
