Helmstedt braces for 38°C heatwave as water supplier ensures stability

Temperatures in Helmstedt and nearby areas are set to hit 38°C this weekend, breaking local heat records. Avacon Wasser, the regional supplier, has confirmed that drinking water remains secure despite the extreme conditions. The company is closely tracking its systems to maintain reliable supply during the heatwave. Water demand rises sharply in hot weather, especially when many households water gardens or use large amounts outdoors at the same time. Avacon Wasser can supply up to 1,400 cubic metres per hour to the Helmstedt/Wolfenbüttel region. Currently, around 75% of this capacity is being used on average.

The company has called for responsible water use during the peak heat. It advises residents to water gardens early in the morning or late in the evening. Additional recommendations include using collected rainwater for irrigation, covering pools when unused, and running washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads.

On average, each person in Germany uses about 126 litres of drinking water daily. Only 4% of this is consumed as drinking water or used in cooking. Most goes toward personal hygiene, toilet flushing, and laundry, with smaller amounts used for dishwashing, indoor plants, and other household tasks. Avacon Wasser has reassured the public that the drinking water supply in Helmstedt and surrounding areas will stay stable even with continued high temperatures. The supplier continues to monitor usage and capacity to prevent shortages. Residents are encouraged to follow the provided guidelines to help manage the increased demand.
