Berlin's Churches Offer Cool Refuge—but Many Stay Locked Amid Heatwaves

Churches in Berlin and Brandenburg are being encouraged to open their doors as cool spaces during heatwaves. Religious leaders have urged congregations to provide refuge for those struggling in high temperatures. However, many churches remain locked due to concerns over security and limited resources. The call to open churches comes as natural heat relief. Their thick walls and high ceilings keep interiors cool, offering shelter from the summer heat. St. Mary’s Church near the TV Tower already stays open daily, funded by tourist donations, and serves marginalised groups. Apostle Paul Church in Schöneberg also remains accessible every day, thanks to volunteer efforts.

Yet, not all churches can follow this example. Only 13 Protestant churches in Berlin open every weekday, with a few more allowing entry under certain conditions. Wichern Church in Spandau is open but has not yet seen an increase in visitors seeking heat relief. Luther Church in Spandau could help but faces repeated vandalism, even when closed.

Financial constraints add to the challenge. Many congregations lack the funds to staff or secure their buildings for extended public access. The opposition has criticised the Senate for not doing enough to support cool spaces during heatwaves. Despite the obstacles, some churches continue to offer refuge. The push for more accessible cool spaces highlights the balance between community support and practical limitations. Without additional resources, the number of open churches may remain limited.
