State of Mexico extends bus service life to 13 years amid fleet transition

The State of Mexico has extended the service life of public passenger transport vehicles. The decision allows eligible buses to operate for up to 13 years, three years beyond the previous limit. Transport providers had pushed for the change, especially after the pandemic. The Mobility Secretariat (Semov) announced the measure to address long-standing requests from operators. Vehicles from 2013 onwards can now renew their documentation, while older models will no longer receive permits.

The extension means around 70,000 vehicles—about 20% of the fleet—will stay in service longer. Those from 2016, originally set for replacement by 2026, may now run until 2029. However, the 13-year rule is temporary and will shrink by one year annually.

Authorities are also encouraging a shift to electric or gas-powered vehicles. The goal is to reduce emissions and enhance passenger safety across the state. The new policy grants transport providers more time to update their fleets. It also supports a gradual transition to cleaner, safer vehicles. The phased reduction of the extension ensures a steady move back to stricter limits.
