Green Party unveils bold plan to transform Germany's struggling rail network

The Green Party has outlined its priorities for improving Germany’s rail network. It aims to make services more reliable, safer and appealing in the coming years. The party acknowledges that modernisation is already underway but notes the significant disruptions this is causing for passengers. Leon Kröck, leader of the Solingen Green Party faction, has highlighted the patience of passengers facing current restrictions. The party believes an attractive rail system is essential to reduce reliance on private cars.

The Greens are pushing for faster upgrades to signalling technology and better coordination of construction projects. They also want local needs to be integrated into planning by state and VRR transport authorities.

Key demands include the electrification and extension of the S7 line to Düsseldorf. The party is also calling for new turnouts near Düsseldorf-Eller Mitte before RRX construction starts. Additionally, they propose rerouting the RE2 line to create a direct link between Solingen, Wuppertal and the eastern Ruhr region.

Recent reopenings of the RE7 and RB48 lines have eased some pressure. However, the Greens warn that more extensive work lies ahead. The Green Party’s plans focus on modernising infrastructure and improving connections. Their proposals aim to create a rail network that offers a viable alternative to car travel. The coming months will see continued efforts to balance construction with passenger convenience.
