Kostanay's Bold Plan: A 40-Kilometre Cycling Network to Transform the City

Kostanay is planning a major expansion of its cycling infrastructure. The city aims to build a 40-kilometre network connecting parks, squares, districts, and residential areas. Once finished, the bike lane system will grow more than five times its current size. The project is still in the planning stage. Officials have looked to Almetyevsk in Tatarstan, known as Russia’s cycling capital, for inspiration.

The new network will use modern technical solutions, clear road markings, and proven best practices. It will also promote efficient use of space, as one parking spot can hold ten bicycles instead of a single car.

Encouraging cycling brings environmental benefits. A 5% drop in car journeys would cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by 14,000 tons, the same as planting 600 hectares of forest. Every kilometre cycled adds €0.08 in societal value, while every kilometre driven costs society €0.50. Cleaner transport also reduces pollution on roads, soil, and water, improving public health. The cycling network will link key parts of Kostanay once complete. It is expected to make travel greener, more efficient, and healthier for residents. The city’s long-term goal is a sustainable transport system with far-reaching benefits.
