Bitcoin's data revolution pushes network activity near record highs

Bitcoin is increasingly being used as a data layer rather than just a payments network. This shift has driven network activity to near-record levels, despite stable bitcoin prices. Demand for embedding data on the blockchain is reshaping how the network operates. The use of Bitcoin’s OP_RETURN feature has surged, allowing users to embed data directly on the blockchain. Bitcoin Ordinals, which encode arbitrary data into transactions, have also contributed to the rise. These developments have pushed CryptoQuant’s Bitcoin Network Activity Index into positive territory for the first time since 2024.

Network congestion has grown as a result. The mempool now holds around 128,000 transactions, the highest since February 2025. Small, data-heavy transactions under 0.01 bitcoin make up 80% of daily activity, increasing competition for block space.

Overall activity remains about 7% below its peak in September 2024. Yet, the surge in data-related usage is driving up fees for traditional financial transfers. In May 2023, Bitcoin mining revenue spiked to $916.6 million, reflecting the network’s growing economic activity. The network is adapting to higher demand for data storage and non-financial uses. This trend is pushing fees upward and testing the limits of Bitcoin’s block space. The changes signal a broader evolution in how the blockchain is utilised.
