Mumbai's Skyline Transformed by a Towering Mural of Hope and Change

A striking new mural has appeared on Mumbai’s skyline, turning a rehabilitation building into a city landmark. The artwork was unveiled by Chandak Group just before National Mural Day on June 27. It covers 15,000 sq. ft. of an SRA housing tower in Borivali East. The mural stretches from the 13th to the 34th floor of the tower. It depicts a young girl holding a golden key before a keyhole-shaped portal, revealing a landscape of flowers, butterflies, and open skies. The image symbolises the move from informal settlements to permanent homes.

Chandak Group created the mural as part of its redevelopment project. A spokesperson said it highlights the importance of homeownership for families in rehabilitation housing. The studio behind the work, ZA Works, noted the difficulty of painting across multiple elevations, calling it both an artistic and engineering challenge.

The piece stands as one of Mumbai’s tallest vertical murals. It is also among the largest artworks on an SRA rehabilitation tower in the city. The project aims to spark discussions about inclusive urban redevelopment and community identity. It also underlines the role of public art in shaping neighbourhoods. The mural now serves as a visible symbol of change and hope for local residents.
