Davao electricity bills surge as power shortages drive up costs
Residents in Davao will see higher electricity bills this month. Davao Light and Power Co., Inc. has raised its residential rate due to rising costs in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market. The adjustment reflects nationwide power supply shortages. The new residential rate now stands at P12.30 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). This marks an increase of P1.95 from the previous rate of P10.35/kWh. The change applies to the billing period from 11 June to 10 July 2026.
The rise stems from tighter power supply conditions. Several power plants experienced simultaneous outages or reduced output. These issues drove up costs in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market.
Davao Light passes on generation, transmission, and government-mandated fees directly to consumers. The company’s distribution charge, however, has not changed since 2013. Fermin Edillon, head of Davao Light’s Reputation Enhancement Department, warns that high bills may persist. The ongoing power supply deficits across the country are likely to keep electricity costs elevated. Consumers can expect similar adjustments in future billing cycles.
