Braunschweig's Gauss School breaks ground on €16.4M eco-friendly expansion
The Gauss School (Gymnasium am Löwenwall) is undergoing a major expansion to meet growing demands. The project follows the shift from G8 to G9 secondary education and will significantly increase the school’s capacity. Construction officially began on Monday with a groundbreaking ceremony led by Mayor Dr. Thorsten Kornblum. The new three-storey building will be fully accessible and replace the current gymnasium. The ground floor will feature a theatre, music room, after-school area, and sports facilities. A basement will provide space for around 350 bicycles.
Classrooms will occupy the second floor, connected to the existing school by a glass-enclosed walkway. The top floor will house building services, a rooftop terrace, and a greened roof equipped with solar panels. The total cost of the project is estimated at €16.4 million.
Work is expected to finish by the start of the 2028/29 school year. The expansion will create additional space for students and staff. It also introduces modern, eco-friendly features to the school. Completion is planned before the 2028/29 academic year begins.
