Maharashtra extends 10% bus fare hike despite ongoing losses in 2026
Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has extended its 10 per cent seasonal fare hike until July 15, 2026. The move affects millions of daily commuters, particularly in rural areas. Passengers will continue to pay higher fares despite the corporation reporting a loss in April 2026. The fare increase was first introduced on April 15, 2026, to offset rising fuel costs and higher dearness allowance payments for staff. The minimum fare remains Rs 14 for adults and Rs 7 for children, while the fare per stage for ordinary and midi bus services stays at Rs 11.05.
Despite the revised fares, MSRTC reported a loss of Rs 76 crore in April 2026. This contrasts sharply with April 2025, when the corporation posted a profit of Rs 14 crore without any seasonal fare increase. The extension of the hike has raised doubts among transport observers about its effectiveness in boosting revenue. The decision to prolong the fare hike is likely to reignite discussions on whether such measures alone can solve MSRTC’s financial struggles. Commuters will face higher costs for at least another month, with no immediate sign of relief. The corporation’s long-term financial health remains uncertain.
