Maharashtra forms expert panel to regulate AI in governance and security
The Maharashtra government is taking steps to regulate the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in governance. A new expert committee will be formed to address risks and create guidelines for AI applications, including facial recognition systems at key sites like the Vidhan Bhavan. Within 30 days, the state will establish an expert committee. Its task is to draft standard operating procedures (SOPs) for AI use. The committee will also assess risks tied to AI-powered tools in administration and governance.
The committee’s report is expected in 4 to 6 months. Its recommendations will then be sent to the Union government. These will help shape a national policy and legal framework for AI.
At the Vidhan Bhavan, the facial recognition system operates under the Legislature Secretariat, not the state government. The Speaker of the Assembly holds authority over its use. If concerns arise, the police may investigate the system upon orders.
Security staff at sensitive government locations will receive training. They will learn to detect and manage AI-enabled devices, such as smart glasses used for covert recording. Current laws already allow action against misuse of such technology. The system at Vidhan Bhavan reportedly uses existing photographs from the Legislature Secretariat’s records. The new measures aim to balance efficiency with privacy and security. They also seek to prevent misuse of AI in government operations.
