Ukraine's DART Missile System Redefines Aerial Strike Capabilities from Stratospheric Balloons

Ukraine’s Center of Innovative Technologies Program has unveiled a new missile system called DART. The weapon is designed for deployment from stratospheric balloons and aims to provide a dependable strike capability against electronic interference. DART measures 1.84 metres in length and weighs 13 kilograms. Its warhead ranges from 3.5 to 10 kilograms, featuring graphite-based penetrating elements. Specialised servo-actuators ensure a stable trajectory and precise activation, regardless of drop conditions.

The system is intended for use at altitudes between 12 and 18 kilometres. During its final approach, DART shuts down onboard systems to become immune to signal jamming. Its unique guidance mechanism deactivates the navigation system at around 6 kilometres, switching to a solid-fuel engine for the last phase.

The balloon platforms for launching DART are provided by a partner, not developed internally. The system is currently moving toward official codification by Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense. Future plans include adapting the technology for both ballistic missiles and surface-to-air variants. DART represents a new approach to missile design for Ukraine. Its resistance to electronic warfare and flexible deployment options are key features. The system is now under review for formal adoption by the country’s defence authorities.
