Russia's Nizhny Novgorod Launches Ministry to Shield Critical Infrastructure

The Nizhny Novgorod region has created a new ministry to protect its critical infrastructure. This body will focus on defending key facilities from threats like drone attacks. It will also manage a mobilisation reserve for emergencies. The Ministry for Critical Infrastructure Protection is now operational. Konstantin Bochkarev, a former Russian Armed Forces officer, leads the new department. Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Tuzhilin will oversee its work.

The ministry’s tasks include safeguarding vital sectors such as energy, transport, and communications. It will coordinate with military leaders, law enforcement, local authorities, and infrastructure owners. Active and passive defence systems will be installed at high-risk sites.

Major industrial enterprises in the region are already strengthening their own security measures. Meanwhile, volunteers from the 'BARS-NN' unit are training to use man-portable air defence systems as part of broader protection efforts. The new ministry will centralise efforts to defend essential services and facilities. Its creation follows growing concerns over drone threats and the need for a structured response. The initiative aims to improve coordination between civilian and military bodies.
