Kazakhstan's President Warns of AI's Role in Spreading Fake Digital Content
Kazakhstan’s president has warned about the growing misuse of AI tools to create fake digital content featuring public figures. He highlighted the need for stronger measures to tackle disinformation and protect human dignity. The president described how AI is being weaponised to produce digital forgeries. He pointed to the rise of ‘bot farms’ and the spread of ‘post-truth’ phenomena as major threats. Journalists, he said, play a key role in countering these issues.
He called for improved media literacy to help people spot manipulation and false information. Responsible media professionals were urged to act as the nation’s ‘immune response’ to such challenges. The president also stressed that freedom of speech must not be mistaken for permissiveness, as rights have limits when they infringe on others’ dignity.
Kazakhstan, he noted, already supports a diversity of opinions and free expression. But he insisted the country must build a firm defence against legal nihilism, radicalism, and foreign values. AI, he added, should also be used by security and law enforcement to detect and block illegal content. The president’s remarks underline the dual role of AI in both spreading and combating disinformation. He urged stronger media literacy and responsible journalism to safeguard public trust. Kazakhstan’s existing framework for free speech must now adapt to these emerging threats.
