Rural Revival: Wartburgkreis Unites to Transform Vacant Village Buildings

The second Regional Conference on the Future of Rural Areas took place on Saturday, June 20, at the Wünschensuhl Village Community Center. Organised by the Wartburgkreis District Administration, it brought together around 40 attendees, including mayors, initiative leaders, and local activists. The event built on the success of the first conference held in November 2025. During the conference, participants explored practical ways to revitalise vacant buildings in rural areas. Several local projects were highlighted, including work at the Wünschensuhl and Uebelroda village community centres.

Robert Anton from LeerGut-Agenten e.V. presented a new cooperation project for Wartburgkreis. Backed by funding from Sparkassenstiftung Wartburg-Region, it will support 12 local groups repurposing empty properties. The district administration and LandCampus Foundation are network partners in the initiative.

After the discussions, attendees joined a guided tour of Wünschensuhl to see the village’s development firsthand. The conference aimed to strengthen ties between local governments, associations, and residents. It provided a platform to share ideas and resources for reviving rural spaces. The planned cooperation project will now help turn these discussions into action across Wartburgkreis.
