Philippines turns to Russia for stable oil supply amid Middle East crisis

The Philippines is moving to strengthen its energy security by formalising oil supply agreements with Russia. This follows a recent shipment of Russian crude and a declared national energy emergency due to Middle East tensions. In March, a ship carrying over 700,000 barrels of Russian crude oil arrived in the Philippines. The delivery came after the country declared a national energy emergency because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Currently, oil imports from Russia are handled on an ad hoc basis, meaning shipments occur only when required. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has now announced plans to develop a system that will institutionalise this arrangement. The goal is to create a more stable supply chain and avoid future disruptions.

The Philippines views Russia as a reliable non-traditional partner for petroleum products. Officials have stated the country is 'very open' to sourcing oil from Russia, seeing it as an additional assured supply option. Formalising the oil deal will give the Philippines greater flexibility in securing its energy needs. The agreement is expected to provide a more consistent and dependable source of petroleum products for the country.
