Cuban crisis takes center stage in bold theatrical protest performance
A theatrical performance will spotlight Cuba’s deepening crisis and its historical ties to protest. The play, Mother Courage: The Authentic and Imagined Diary of Cindy Sheehan by Dario Fo and Franca Rame, draws on the real-life activism of Cindy Sheehan. She gained attention in 2004 after her son’s death in the Iraq War, leading her to protest outside President George W. Bush’s ranch. Cuba is currently experiencing its worst economic collapse since the 1959 revolution. Daily blackouts and crippling shortages have gripped the island, worsened by the long-standing U.S. embargo. The threat of military intervention adds to the tension.
An excerpt from the play will be performed by Cuban actress Roxana Pineda at Kantine. After the reading, a panel discussion will take place. Bernd Pickert will moderate the event, which will examine Cuba’s current struggles and possible solutions.
The panel includes Cuban exiles: writer Amir Valle, and journalists Mauricio Mendoza and Cynthia de la Cantera. They will address the state of media in Cuba, potential catalysts for change, and the role of the diaspora in pushing for reforms. The play itself raises urgent questions about the country’s political future. The event combines theatre and debate to highlight Cuba’s challenges. It offers a platform for voices from the diaspora to discuss the island’s path forward. The performance and discussion aim to shed light on the crisis and the forces shaping its outcome.
