A new study by VTB My Investments has profiled the habits of young investors. It analysed nearly 1 million portfolios belonging to clients under 30. The findings reveal a clear preference for stability and controlled risk in their financial strategies. Gen Z investors favour predictable returns over speculative bets. Bonds dominate their portfolios, accounting for 46% of holdings. Mutual funds follow at 30%, with stocks at 18% and cash or precious metals making up the remaining 6%.
Money market exchange-traded funds are particularly popular. They represent 22% of the average young investor’s portfolio. Andrei Yatskov, head of VTB’s brokerage department, notes that this group enters the market with well-defined financial plans.
The average portfolio size for under-30s is 279,000 rubles. These investors also lead in adopting AI-powered advisory tools. Over 7% of all clients already use them, with the number rising among younger users. Their use of automation is shaping the future of retail investing. Young investors are building diversified portfolios with a strong bond base. They balance this with higher-risk stocks while relying on AI services for management. Their approach signals a shift towards stable, technology-driven investment strategies.
