Russia sues district over illegal dumping near Sea of Japan coast
Russia’s Far Eastern Interregional Directorate of Rosprirodnadzor has taken legal action against the Khasansky Municipal District. The lawsuit demands 694,958 rubles for soil damage caused by illegal dumping. The case will be heard in the Arbitration Court of Primorsky Krai on June 29, 2026. Unauthorised dumpsites of asphalt and asphalt-concrete waste were found on undemarcated municipal lands. One site lies at the entrance to the urban-type settlement of Posyet. Another is located 3 kilometres from the settlement. The contaminated area spans 1,005 square metres in total.
The dumped waste lies within the water protection zone of Expedition Bay in the Sea of Japan. Some of it encroaches on the coastal protective strip. Rosprirodnadzor had previously demanded compensation from the district administration, but the request went unanswered.
Separately, environmental specialists discovered 229 trees had been illegally cut down in Akademichesky Eco-Park at 105 Kirov Street. The estimated damage from this incident amounts to 2,948,171 rubles. Earlier, Vladivostok’s administration also filed a claim against Russian Railways to recover compensation for environmental harm. The lawsuit aims to recover costs for the soil contamination caused by the illegal dumping. Primorsky Krai has a history of pursuing legal action over environmental damages. The court will decide the outcome of this case in 2026.
