Netherlands Approves Tesla's FSD Supervised After Rigorous 18-Month Review
The Netherlands vehicle authority, RDW, has granted European type approval for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised system. This decision follows an extensive 18-month review process involving rigorous testing and data analysis. The approval process began with Tesla submitting a statistical analysis based on data from 1.8 million kilometres driven with FSD Supervised across Europe. The RDW independently validated this data and conducted over 3,000 hours of testing on public roads and controlled tracks. These tests covered diverse environments and extreme weather conditions to assess the system’s reliability.
Safety was the RDW’s primary concern. The authority highlighted Tesla’s strict and continuous driver monitoring as a key factor in ensuring safety during supervised driving. As part of the approval, the RDW adjusted standard European legislation, requiring Tesla to report data monthly instead of annually.
Since receiving approval, nearly 40,000 Tesla vehicles equipped with FSD Supervised have driven approximately 24 million kilometres in the Netherlands. The RDW confirmed no relevant incidents occurred during this period. The European type approval is now valid for use across the Netherlands, with a real-time monitoring framework in place for advanced driver assistance systems. The approval establishes a new standard for oversight of advanced driving systems in Europe. Tesla must now provide monthly data reports to the RDW, ensuring ongoing scrutiny of FSD Supervised performance. The system’s safe operation over millions of kilometres has so far met regulatory expectations.
