Yakutia lawmaker demands mining sector overhaul amid rapid industry growth

Vasily Nikolayev, a deputy in Yakutia’s Il Tumen parliament, has called for major changes in how the region manages its mining sector. He argues that the current system is inefficient and cannot handle the industry’s rapid growth. Nikolayev highlights a key problem: oversight of mining companies is scattered across different officials, with no single person held responsible. Anatoly Borisov, the regional government head, is supposed to coordinate with resource firms, but the arrangement has failed to deliver results.

With mining making up about 20% of Yakutia’s development strategy, dozens of new deposits are set to open soon. Nikolayev warns that the industry’s expansion will soon touch every part of the region, requiring a more structured approach.

His solution involves creating a dedicated agency to supervise mining companies without increasing staff or budgets. The agency’s leader would personally know every mining executive and manage all interactions. Nikolayev also proposes a specialised committee within Il Tumen to strengthen oversight further. The proposed reforms aim to centralise accountability and improve coordination with mining firms. If implemented, the changes could provide a clearer framework for managing Yakutia’s growing resource sector. Nikolayev insists this shift is essential to keep pace with the industry’s expansion.
