MCZMA Clears Design Changes For Marine Drive Tunnel Project, Recommends Sea-Side Promenade Expansion To Centre

Mumbai's underground tunnel gets design revamp for smoother East-West travel

The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) has approved design changes for the P D'Mello Road-Orange Gate to Marine Drive underground tunnel. The revised plans include a sea-side promenade expansion and lane reconfiguration. These updates aim to improve traffic flow between South Mumbai and the eastern suburbs. During its 198th meeting on 16 June, the MCZMA reviewed and cleared the revised proposals submitted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The changes involve expanding Marine Drive’s carriageway to a 3+3+3+4 lane arrangement. This adjustment is part of a broader effort to prepare for increased traffic once the tunnel opens.

The authority also granted Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance for the underground road alignment. This approval came with conditions, including the implementation of a traffic management plan and the installation of noise barriers. Additionally, the promenade extension will stretch about 120 metres in length and up to 60 metres in width, covering nearly 2,298 square metres.

The MCZMA has now recommended the promenade expansion to the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for final approval. The project is expected to ease congestion on P D'Mello Road and reduce travel time significantly. The tunnel itself remains a critical part of Mumbai’s future East-West connectivity network. The revised design and promenade expansion are set to address traffic challenges ahead of the tunnel’s operation. The MCZMA’s approval moves the project closer to final clearance. Once completed, the changes will enhance connectivity and reduce travel delays in the city.
