Mumbai's Metro Line 2B achieves key milestone with massive steel span launch
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully launched the first composite steel span across the Central Railway corridor for Metro Line 2B. The operation took place during a carefully planned two-hour railway traffic block in the early hours of June 14. This achievement marks a significant milestone in expanding Mumbai’s metro network. The steel span, measuring 54.25 metres in length and weighing 252 metric tonnes, was installed between 1 am and 3 am. Two 500-metric-tonne hydraulic cranes, supported by a standby crane, lifted and positioned the structure with precision. Around 30 engineers and technical experts, along with nearly 100 skilled and unskilled workers, carried out the task.
The operation required months of planning and close coordination with Central Railway authorities. Despite the complexity, it was completed without any disruption to railway services. Metro Line 2B, which will link D N Nagar in Andheri to Mandale in Mankhurd, is a key east-west corridor for the city. Phase 1 of the line, a 4.5km stretch from Diamond Garden in Chembur to Mandale, is already in service. The successful launch of the steel span demonstrates the engineering expertise needed for major infrastructure projects in busy urban areas. It also adheres to strict safety standards. The completion of this stage is expected to speed up construction on the corridor, bringing Mumbai closer to an expanded metro system.
