French Court Orders TotalEnergies to Overhaul Climate Strategy in Landmark Ruling

A French court has ruled against TotalEnergies for failing to meet its climate vigilance obligations. The decision marks the first time a court has imposed oversight on a company’s emissions reduction plan. Campaigners and the City of Paris have hailed it as a partial victory in holding the firm accountable for its role in global warming. The court found TotalEnergies liable for not including Scope 3 emissions in its climate strategy. These emissions, tied to the use of its products, must now be addressed within six months. The company must also outline concrete measures to reduce its climate impact or face further legal action and financial penalties.

TotalEnergies has been ordered to pay €20,000 to each claimant. The ruling comes as Europe endures a record heatwave, which scientists say would have been ‘virtually impossible’ without climate change. Research also shows fossil fuel and cement producers have directly worsened hundreds of heatwaves worldwide this century.

Despite the court’s decision, TotalEnergies still plans to increase hydrocarbon production by 3% annually until 2030. At least two-thirds of its investments will remain in fossil fuels. Failure to comply with the new requirements could lead to further liability and additional fines. The case sets a precedent for corporate accountability in climate action. It also reflects a growing trend of lawsuits targeting businesses over their contribution to global warming. TotalEnergies now has six months to adjust its climate vigilance plan and avoid further penalties.
