Spirit Airlines exits Denver Airport after 12 years of service
Spirit Airlines will end its operations at Denver International Airport on 9 January 2024. The move marks the end of a presence that began in May 2012. Passengers with bookings after this date will receive refunds. The airline currently uses one gate in Concourse C for flights to Las Vegas, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale. Its share of passenger traffic in Denver has dropped from 2.1% in 2019 to 0.8% in 2023.
Spirit has faced financial struggles, with shares falling nearly 40% after third-quarter losses of almost $160 million. In August, it grounded seven A320neo aircraft due to Pratt & Whitney engine problems. A planned merger with JetBlue was also blocked by a Justice Department lawsuit.
United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Frontier Airlines will continue serving Denver without disruption. The departure leaves the city with fewer low-cost flight options. Spirit’s exit means one less budget carrier for Denver travellers. Refunds will be processed for affected passengers. The airline’s reduced market share and ongoing challenges contributed to the decision.
