Spirit Airlines has shut down operations, leaving Terminal 4 at Fort Lauderdale Airport empty. The collapse follows years of financial struggles, with high jet fuel prices dealing the final blow. Despite interest from potential buyers, no viable offers materialised to save the airline. The airline’s closure was confirmed after months of financial instability. While several companies explored purchasing Spirit, none could secure a deal that would keep it running. Employees will continue receiving pay until 2 May, but their health insurance will end shortly after.

Other airlines are already moving to fill the gap. JetBlue, Allegiant, Frontier, and Breeze Airways have announced plans to expand services at Fort Lauderdale. JetBlue will add 11 new routes, Breeze Airways eight, and Frontier nine. These expansions are expected to create job openings for former Spirit staff. Passengers, however, have raised concerns about rising fares. Sue Zachary, a frequent flyer, worries that reduced competition could push ticket prices higher. The loss of Spirit’s low-cost flights may leave budget travellers with fewer affordable options.

Spirit Airlines’ exit leaves a void in the market, but rival carriers are stepping in quickly. The expansion plans at Fort Lauderdale Airport could ease some disruptions for travellers and workers. Still, the long-term impact on airfare costs remains uncertain.
