Oscars 2024 security sweep leaves LA residents scrambling for towed cars
Dozens of Los Angeles residents faced an unpleasant surprise the morning after the 2024 Oscars. Their cars had vanished overnight, towed away as part of the event's security measures. Many woke up to a missing vehicle and a hefty £400 fee to reclaim it from the impound lot.
The towing followed a temporary no-parking zone set up around the Dolby Theatre. This year's restrictions covered roughly 65 square miles, stretching across Hollywood Boulevard, Highland Avenue, and Sunset Boulevard. Unlike previous years, the 2026 security perimeter expanded to about a square mile, reaching streets half a mile from the venue—including residential neighbourhoods.
Signs warning of the no-parking rules were posted around 48 hours before enforcement began. But some residents found the notices unclear or missed them entirely. Many had already parked before the signs went up, leaving them unaware of the risk. Instead of heading to work, they spent the morning tracking down their towed cars.
Reactions to the crackdown were mixed. Some locals argued the city should give clearer advance warnings for such large-scale events. Others accepted it as an unavoidable part of living near Hollywood's high-profile gatherings.
The towing operation left affected residents with an unexpected bill and a disrupted morning. With security zones expanding further into residential streets, similar incidents could occur in future events. The city has yet to announce any changes to how such restrictions will be communicated going forward.
