New York's Marine Air Terminal Shuts Down After Spirit Airlines' Sudden Exit

New York’s Marine Air Terminal has effectively closed after Spirit Airlines cancelled all flights. The shutdown came just days after the airline announced its departure from the site. By Tuesday, the building stood nearly empty, with no passengers passing through its gates. Spirit Airlines had operated from all six gates at the terminal until last Saturday. That day, the company announced an 'orderly wind-down', scrapping every scheduled flight and ending customer service. Within hours, the airline’s lease expired, leaving the gates unused.

By Tuesday, the terminal’s entrance was blocked with 'no entry' signs. Posters directed former Spirit passengers to contact other carriers instead. Inside, the Transportation Security Administration checkpoints remained closed, as no ticketed travellers arrived. Only one lounge stayed open—Modern Aviation’s private and charter plane service. The terminal’s concession stands and customer service desks had already shut down, leaving the space largely abandoned.

The Marine Air Terminal now sits idle after Spirit’s exit. The closure of checkpoints, concessions, and gates marks the end of commercial operations there. The building’s future remains unclear following the airline’s complete withdrawal.
