A new digital ticketing system called CiCoBW has launched across Baden-Württemberg. The service lets passengers check in and out of trains and buses using just their smartphone. It then calculates the cheapest fare automatically, making travel simpler and more affordable.

CiCoBW works by tracking journeys through a smartphone app. Users must first register for a free account within their local transport association's app. Once set up, the system detects when they board and leave a vehicle, then charges the lowest possible fare at the end of the day.

The service is now available in the Stuttgart Transport and Tariff Association (VVS) network, as well as other regions in Baden-Württemberg, including KVV. Monthly costs are capped at €72—slightly more than the Deutschlandticket's €69, with an extra €3 added. Baden-Württemberg is not the only region adopting this technology. Similar check-in/check-out systems have rolled out in at least five other German transport networks. These include ÜSTRA easy in Hannover (launched in March 2025), eezy.nrw in North Rhine-Westphalia, and FAIRTIQ-based services in the Rhein-Main area.

CiCoBW aims to simplify fare calculations and reduce costs for passengers. With a daily best-fare guarantee and a predictable monthly cap, it offers an alternative to traditional ticketing. The system is part of a wider trend, as more German regions introduce digital check-in solutions for public transport.
