Children's Stroller Manufacturer Zekiwa Files for Insolvency - Zekiwa, Europe's once-dominant pram maker, files for insolvency after decades of legacy
Zekiwa, a renowned pram manufacturer headquartered in Kretzschau, has filed for insolvency following years of financial hardships. The company, once Europe's leading pram producer, now grapples with dwindling sales and escalating costs. Operations, however, continue as usual for the time being.
Established in 1928, Zekiwa rose to prominence as a major player in East Germany before reunification. Before 1990, it held the title of Europe's largest pram manufacturer by volume. Post-1990, the brand expanded production in Chemnitz and focused on high-quality, innovative designs. Despite competition from international brands like Bugaboo and Stokke, it maintained a niche leadership position alongside German rivals such as Hartan and ABC Design.
In recent years, declining birth rates have cut into demand for Zekiwa's products. Financial pressure has mounted, with sales dropping and expenses climbing. The company's struggles culminated in its insolvency filing.
Ulrich Luppe from Halle has been appointed as the preliminary insolvency administrator. His role involves stabilizing the business while a solution is sought. To attract new investors, Magdeburg-based restructuring expert Nico Kämpfert has also been engaged.
Zekiwa's insolvency signals a challenging chapter for a brand with deep roots in German manufacturing. The company will keep running while administrators work to secure its future. Investor interest and restructuring efforts will dictate whether the long-standing business can recover.
