Construction is advancing on the world’s longest railway tunnel beneath the Brenner Pass in the Alps. The massive project will connect Austria and Italy as part of the trans-European rail network. Workers from 11 European countries are now digging through the mountains to complete the 64-kilometre route. Powerful tunneling machines, each with 6,000 horsepower, are cutting through solid rock. Some of these machines tower nearly 20 metres high and stretch hundreds of metres long. Leading European companies are supplying equipment and expertise for the ambitious build.

Project director Sebastian Reimann called the effort a shared achievement. In his words, 'Europe can take pride in what is being built here. This is a shared endeavor for all Europeans.' The tunnel will form a key link in the continent’s rail infrastructure once complete. The Brenner Base Tunnel will span 64 kilometres, making it the longest railway tunnel in the world. Its completion will strengthen transport ties between Austria and Italy. The project also highlights cross-border collaboration in modern engineering.
