Why Electric Rental Cars Still Struggle to Win Over Short-Term Drivers
Demand for electric rental cars remains low despite rising fuel prices and growing interest in second-hand models. Rental firms report little change in customer preferences, with most short-term hirers still opting for petrol or diesel vehicles. Industry leaders highlight ongoing challenges in infrastructure and convenience as key barriers. The recent surge in fuel costs, linked to tensions in the Middle East, has done little to boost demand for electric rental vehicles. Sixt, one of the largest international rental companies, confirmed no noticeable increase in bookings for battery-electric cars across Europe or the U.S. Matthias Krohn, president of the German Car Rental Association, echoed this sentiment, stating that short-term rentals show no significant shift in preference.
Infrastructure problems continue to discourage renters from choosing electric options. Sixt’s CFO, Franz Weinberger, criticised the lack of reliable charging points at major transport hubs, making electric rentals less practical for travellers. Most customers seeking electric vehicles tend to be corporate clients booking long-term leases of several months, rather than private renters looking for short trips.
Europcar’s experience mirrors this trend, with its electric fleet mainly used by businesses rather than individual hirers. Meanwhile, the used electric vehicle market saw a 39% rise in demand last month, according to data from Autoscout24. However, industry experts suggest this growth reflects existing interest rather than a broader, sustainable shift driven by recent fuel price hikes. For now, electric rental cars remain a niche choice, favoured mostly by corporate clients and long-term users. The lack of charging infrastructure and the added complexity of managing battery levels continue to deter short-term renters. While used electric vehicle sales climb, rental companies see no immediate signs of a wider change in consumer habits.
