WhatsApp Web finally adds voice and video calls with end-to-end encryption

WhatsApp Web is now offering voice and video calls for the first time, thanks to a new feature launched in early February 2026. The feature started with a small group of beta testers, who got to enjoy encrypted calls using the Signal protocol.

The rollout began with one-to-one conversations only. Meta chose beta programme users for the initial phase, with no specific countries or groups prioritised. A wider release to all users is planned in the coming weeks.

Screen sharing is also being introduced, letting users display their screens during video chats. This addition arrives years after remote work surged during the pandemic, leaving WhatsApp behind competitors like Zoom and Microsoft Teams. The company now aims to offer a simpler alternative for quick calls.

Group calls for up to 32 participants are still in development. Additional features, including call links and scheduled calls, will follow after further testing.

The update positions WhatsApp Web as a straightforward option for personal and business calls. Encrypted voice and video chats are now available, with more functions expected soon. The move expands WhatsApp's role beyond messaging into direct competition with dedicated conferencing tools.
