Western Umfahrungsring faces major closures for bridge upgrades in late January
Major roadworks will disrupt traffic on the Western Umfahrungsring from late January to early February 2026. The project includes installing a new pedestrian bridge and reinforcing the Turgenev Bridge. Drivers and commuters should expect delays and route changes during this period.
The first phase begins on January 30 at 8:00 AM, when the Turgenev Bridge will close until 8:00 PM on February 1. Crews will install reinforced concrete blocks for the span during this time.
On February 1, from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM, the Near Western Bypass will shut completely between the 'German Village' roundabout and Srednyaya Street. No vehicles or pedestrians will be allowed through. Two 80-ton mobile cranes will then lift a 29-ton truss into place for the new elevated pedestrian crossing, which features a 3-metre-wide, 55.6-metre-long walkway.
Later that day, from 9:00 AM on February 1 until 9:00 AM on February 2, further restrictions will apply. Bus routes 10, 25, and 58 will be rerouted, with replacement services covering affected stops. Additional public transport changes will impact routes 29, 38, 32, 75, 83, and 121A. Drivers can still access the work zone via Krasnikh Partizan Street or the 'Krasnaya Ploshchad' shopping centre.
The entire project operates under a municipal contract, with construction and installation work ongoing across the Western Bypass.
The roadworks will introduce a new pedestrian crossing and reinforce key infrastructure. Temporary closures and transport adjustments will remain in effect until February 2. Authorities advise planning alternative routes during the affected times.
