Wachau's apricot blossoms signal spring's arrival along the Danube
Spring has arrived in the Wachau region, bringing the first signs of apricot blossom along the Danube. The area's famous trees, nearly all of the protected Klosterneuburger Marille variety, are beginning to bloom. This seasonal change also marks the return of local transport offers, including the Wachau Spring Ticket for buses, trains, and ferries. Around 100,000 apricot trees now dot the Wachau landscape, with the earliest buds just starting to open. Full bloom, however, won't peak until Easter week, lasting anywhere from ten days to three weeks. The region's apricots are globally recognised for their high beta-carotene content and economic value, serving as a cultural symbol of Niederösterreich.
Visitors can track the blossom's progress in real time via live webcams. Meanwhile, DDSG Blue Danube's ferry services will restart on March 28, coinciding with the Wachau Spring Ticket's validity period. This ticket covers buses, weekend Wachau Railway trips, and Danube ferries until April 26. Franz Schöberl, head of the Wachau Apricot Association, has noted the steady arrival of spring across the area. The region's apricot production remains a key agricultural and touristic draw, supported by the unique Klosterneuburger Marille variety.
The Wachau region's apricot trees are set to reach full bloom by Easter, offering a seasonal spectacle for locals and tourists alike. With transport links resuming and blossom updates available online, the area prepares for another busy spring. The Wachau Spring Ticket will remain valid until late April, ensuring easy access to the region's scenic routes and ferry services.
